William Shatner Slighted By New ‘Star Trek’ Movie

In what can only be described as a dismal shame, William Shatner is being left out of the loop on the upcoming Star Trek motion picture. Shatner’s fellow cast mate, Leonard Nimoy, was attached to the project early and is set to reprise his role as Mr. Spock. Shatner expressed surprise to the Associated Press last week that he’s not in the movie at all. For shame. You can’t have Trek without Captain Kirk, people.
The new Trek harkens back to the well-loved original series and features Chris Pine as a young Kirk and Zachary Quinto as young Spock. Nevermind the fact that Kirk died in 1994’s Star Trek: Generations. Shatner is an icon of the scifi genre – if nothing else, he could appear as a holographic image.

This past fortnight, the HD DVD release of Transformers made high-definition history with over 100,000 units sold in the first day—a record that supplanted day-one sales across both formats. But this week Sony will inevitably pull the warring robots off their high horses—likely with a quick tug on some carefully aimed webbing.
The hugely profitable but ambivalently received Spider-Man 3 releases Tuesday and will undoubtedly be a smash hit for Blu-ray. And for those who can’t justify said purchase, the film will also release in a high-def trilogy.
Universal and Warner also have some decent contributions this week, but the real content explosion comes from DVD International and their HDScape series. Finally, I can sit in my tiny condominium and watch a high-definition fireplace, an exotic aquarium, or the slow but steady thaw of Antarctica.

Box Office Breakdown: Saw Slices Its Way to #1

This weekend’s success of Saw IV proved that ‘torture porn’ is very much alive and well…at least right before All Hallows Eve. (Apparently originality is not a prerequisite when you’re in the haunting mood.) The horror series, which took in $55 million domestically when it debuted in 2004, bloodied the competition with its recent $31 million take. It will now likely hit the $80 million mark the last two installments surpassed.
Although Dan in Real Life, lagged behind with only $11 million, the film at least managed to place second. Hopefully Dan will have legs in the weeks to come; it’s a nice counter-programming option for those desperately seeking romance on their date nights. Those hunting for acceptable kids fare may have it a bit harder though—- which probably explains why The Game Plan has remained firmly planted in the Top Five.

Olive Stone and Woody Harrelson Re-Team

When Woody Harrelson snagged the highly publicized role in Oliver Stone’s Natural Born Killers, Harrelson’s acting creds were hardly up to par. He’d appeared in a well-loved comedy TV series and a lighthearted basketball comedy, hardly roles that displayed his chops to play the murder-loving, law-breaking, hardcore killer that has now become a screen cultural icon. Stone said at the time that he saw murder in Harrelson’s eyes, a strange comment to make considering the actor’s father was serving a prison sentence.
Now, Stone is giving Harrelson another role in the gritty Vietnam War drama Pinkville. The United Artists flick will focus on the 1968 My Lai Massacre, where 500 people were killed by U.S. soldiers. Harrelson’s role is Col. Henderson, the officer leading the task force who committed the massacre. Pinkville won’t be Stone’s first foray into the Vietnam War, and he’ll direct a star-studded cast in the flick. Production is scheduled to start next year.

This Halloween will be rife with horrific gore as the fourth installment to the Saw film franchise hits the theaters. To promote both the film and the spirit of Halloween giving, the Lionsgate film studio has launched a blood drive. Give blood to get blood (on the screen) is the motto, one that’s been successful for Saw in the past. Last year’s “Give ‘Til it Hurts” drive brought 23,500 pints of blood to the American Red Cross. This year’s goal is 60,000 pints of the red stuff.
The three existing Saw films have raked in the dough, $415 million globally since the 2004 original. In the past three years, a total of 38,000 pints of blood have been collected through the Saw franchise efforts. The blood drive has become part of the ritual of the Saw films. Every two seconds in the U.S. alone, someone needs blood. During a 95-minute Saw IV flick, approximately 2,850 people will need blood. Give before you go see the newest Saw installment…blood is a Hallow’s Eve tradition.

Lindsay Lohan, still fresh from her third stint in rehab, will host a New Year’s Eve party to ring in 2008. According to US Magazine, Lindsay will hold the party at LAX nightclub. Sources say that Lohan is contractually obliged to hold the party, as she owes Pure Management (the group running LAX) money. (And I thought Disney movies paid well.) A sister club of LAX, PURE, was supposed to hold a 21st birthday party celebration for Lindsay over the summer. The star was forced to cancel when she went off to rehab, though she did pay PURE back the money they offered her. Now she’ll fulfill her commitment with a New Year’s Eve bash.

‘Angels & Demons’ Set February Start

Yes, there were a couple things about the movie version of Dan Brown’s controversial and critically acclaimed novel The Da Vinci Code that didn’t quite match up, but does that mean it wasn’t a good movie? Yeah, Tom Hanks looked kind of dumb with long hair, and his Boston accent was kind of lame, but it still wasn’t a bad film. That said, we should all be glad that Akiva Goldsman is working over time on the script for the film’s sequel (and novel’s prequel), Angels & Demons, to get it done before that pesky writer’s strike.
Ron Howard will return to direct the sequel which will begin filming in February under the Columbia Pictures banner. And yes, for those of you who are dying to know, Tom Hanks and his academic mullet will be back as well.

The well-liked funnyman who mysteriously tried to take his life over the summer is planning to give an interview under some rather odd circumstances. The Darjeeling Limited star, Owen Wilson, will be talking to the film’s director, Wes Anderson, as part of MySpace’s Artist on Artist series. You can read the post come midnight Friday, Oct. 26.
The interview is part of a promotional campaign, suggesting that Wilson may not talk about the suicide attempt (such revelations are generally saved for Oprah). But one never knows – Owen may spill all to Anderson and, by extension, millions of MySpace
